Chateau de Pibarnon Bandol Rouge 1.5L MAGNUM 2019

Château de Pibarnon's Bandol rouge is the estate's flagship red, a blend of ninety per cent Mourvèdre and ten per cent Grenache from its highest and oldest terraces, in magnum.

Bandol, on the Mediterranean coast east of Marseille, is the one French appellation where Mourvèdre reliably ripens, and its wines must by law spend at least eighteen months in wood. Pibarnon sits above the village at around three hundred metres, its vines planted on restanques, the stone-walled terraces cut into a natural amphitheatre. The soils are limestone and clay, and the combination of altitude and sea influence gives a freshness that is uncommon in Mediterranean reds. This cuvée is drawn only from the oldest vines and the best parcels. The vineyard is farmed organically and biodynamically under chef de culture Éric Schladenhaufen, while in the cellar Marie Laroze works with wild yeasts, large-format oak, low sulphur and small terroir-based batches, avoiding anything that would obscure the site.

Worth five years in the cellar and good for fifteen or more. Serve at 16-18°C with slow-roasted lamb, daube of beef or grilled game birds.
