Château de Pibarnon Bandol Rouge 1.5L MAGNUM 2020

Château de Pibarnon Bandol Rouge is the estate's flagship red and one of the great mountain Bandols, offered here in magnum.

Bandol, on the Provençal coast east of Marseille, is Mourvèdre country, and Pibarnon sits high above the sea on terraces known as restanques. The blend is 90 per cent Mourvèdre and 10 per cent Grenache, taken only from the oldest vines and finest terraces of the property, including Bel-Air, La Grande Paguette, La Falaise, Les Pointes Blanches, Le Col and Les Dolmens. Altitude, sea air and limestone and clay soils together give a freshness rare among Mediterranean reds. The vineyard is farmed organically and biodynamically under chef de culture Éric Schladenhaufen, while cellarmaster Marie Laroze works with wild yeasts, large-format oak, low sulphur and small terroir-based batches. The wine fermented in concrete with about 25 per cent whole bunches, then aged 20 months in new and used foudres.

Give it three to five years and expect two decades in magnum. Serve at 16-18°C with slow-roast lamb shoulder, daube of beef or aged hard cheese.
