Château de Pibarnon Bandol Rouge 2007

Château de Pibarnon Bandol Rouge is a Mourvèdre-dominant red grown on high limestone terraces above the Mediterranean.

Bandol is the Provençal appellation built on Mourvèdre, a late-ripening variety that needs the heat and the sea air of these south-facing hillsides to ripen properly, and the wines are held in barrel and bottle for years before release. Château de Pibarnon sits higher than most, and its wines are among the classic mountain Bandols. The blend is ninety per cent Mourvèdre with ten per cent Grenache, drawn from the oldest vines on the estate’s highest restanques, the dry-stone terraces cut into the hill, including Bel-Air, La Grande Paguette, La Falaise, Les Pointes Blanches, Le Col and Les Dolmens. Altitude, the influence of the sea and the limestone and clay soils together bring a freshness and purity that is uncommon among Mediterranean reds. The estate is farmed organically.

Already mature, so drink over the next several years and decant before serving. Serve at 16-18°C with slow-roasted lamb, daube of beef or hard sheep’s cheese.
