Château de Pibarnon Bandol Rouge 2009

Château de Pibarnon Bandol Rouge is the estate's flagship red, 90 per cent Mourvèdre grown on high limestone terraces within sight of the Mediterranean.

Bandol is the great Mourvèdre appellation of southern France, and Pibarnon works some of its highest ground, a natural amphitheatre of restanques above La Cadière-d'Azur built on limestone and clay. The blend here is 90 per cent Mourvèdre with 10 per cent Grenache. Altitude, sea breezes and those calcareous soils together give the freshness and purity that set this style apart from warmer Mediterranean reds, and Mourvèdre's firm tannin and slow evolution make Bandol one of the longest-lived reds of the south. The cuvée is built only from the oldest vines and the best terraces of the property, including Bel-Air, La Grande Paguette, La Falaise, Les Pointes Blanches, Le Col and Les Dolmens. The estate is farmed organically.

A mature release drinking well now; serve at 16–18°C with slow-cooked lamb, wild mushrooms or a dish of game.
