Château de Pibarnon Bandol Rouge 2011

Château de Pibarnon Bandol Rouge is the estate's top wine, a Mourvèdre-dominant red from high-altitude terraces above the Mediterranean.

Bandol is the Mourvèdre appellation of Provence, its reds required by law to carry at least half the variety and to spend a minimum of eighteen months in wood. Pibarnon sits higher than most of its neighbours, on restanques, the stone-walled terraces cut into a limestone and clay amphitheatre above La Cadière-d'Azur, and is one of the reference points for what is often called mountain Bandol. The blend is 90 per cent Mourvèdre with 10 per cent Grenache. Altitude and the moderating influence of the sea, together with the limestone-clay soils, give a freshness and purity uncommon among Mediterranean reds. This cuvée is drawn only from the oldest vines and the finest terraces of the estate, among them Bel-Air, La Grande Paguette, La Falaise, Les Pointes Blanches, Le Col and Les Dolmens. Farming is organic.

Now well into its drinking window and good for years yet; serve at 16–18°C with daube of beef, grilled lamb or aged sheep's cheese.
