Description
This is Château de Pibarnon's principal red, a Bandol of 90% Mourvèdre and 10% Grenache from the estate's high terraces.
Bandol, on the Mediterranean coast east of Marseille, is the appellation where Mourvèdre finds its clearest expression, and Pibarnon sits high above the sea on restanques, the stone-walled terraces cut into limestone and clay. Altitude, sea breezes and those soils give a freshness and purity uncommon among southern reds. The cuvée is drawn only from the oldest vines and finest terraces, including Bel-Air, La Grande Paguette, La Falaise, Les Pointes Blanches, Le Col and Les Dolmens. The vineyard is farmed organically and biodynamically under chef de culture Éric Schladenhaufen, and in the cellar Marie Laroze works with wild yeasts, large-format oak, low sulphur and small terroir batches. Fermentation took place in concrete with around 25% whole bunches, followed by 20 months in new and used foudres.
Approachable young for a Bandol, and it will run for fifteen years or more. Serve at 16 to 18°C with lamb, daube de boeuf or grilled game.
