Château des Quarts Pouilly-Fuissé Premier Cru 2023

Château des Quarts Pouilly-Fuissé Premier Cru is a white Burgundy from the limestone hills south of Mâcon.

Pouilly-Fuissé is the leading appellation of the Mâconnais, spread across Chaintré, Fuissé, Solutré-Pouilly and Vergisson beneath two great limestone rocks that rise out of the vineyards. For most of its life it had no internal hierarchy; that changed in 2020, when twenty two climats were classified as premier cru, the first such promotion in Burgundy for decades. Château des Quarts is based at Chaintré, at the southern end of the appellation, where Les Quarts is one of the classified sites. The vines sit on clay over limestone, and the wine is fermented and aged in oak barrels, in the manner of the Côte de Beaune rather than the more commercial Mâconnais norm.

Serve at around 12 degrees with white fish, roast chicken or soft cheeses; it is worth holding for a few years.
