Château des Tourettes Vin de France 18 de Moyenne Blanc

Château des Tourettes 18 de Moyenne Blanc is a multi-vintage white built as a perpetual blend, refreshed each year with new wine.

Jean-Marie Guffens, of Verget and Guffens-Heynen in the Mâconnais, also makes wine in the south of France at Château des Tourettes, and this is one of his multi-vintage whites. It works something like a perpetual blend rather than a true solera: the base is refreshed each year with new-vintage wine while a similar proportion is bottled off to order. Marsanne leads the blend, with decreasing amounts of Roussanne, Viognier, Chardonnay, Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc. The juice is held on lees in 200-hectolitre variable-capacity tanks, which keeps it fresh and allows slow development. Because the varietal proportions added each year differ, there is a degree of variation between bottlings; the aged material brings complexity and texture, the young wine brings freshness and verve. Moyenne means the average, and the number refers to the base on which this release is built.

Drinking now and good for several years. Serve at 10-12°C with roast chicken, grilled fish or a semi-hard sheep's cheese.
