Description
Tinus Blanc de Noirs is a still white pressed from old-vine Grenache Noir at Jean-Marie Guffens' Luberon estate.
Making a white from a black grape is straightforward in principle and rare in practice outside Champagne: the juice of Grenache Noir is colourless, so everything depends on getting the fruit off its skins quickly. The vineyard sits on limestone-rich soils at 420 metres in the Luberon, at the eastern edge of Provence, where altitude keeps the acidity intact in a warm climate. The grapes are pressed immediately after harvest and separated from the skins before fermenting in concrete, then the wine is aged on lees in stainless steel. The result is a pulpy, succulent white with a twist of red fruit and spice and a stone-fruit juiciness. It is bottled as Vin de France, since no local appellation allows for it.
Drink young, within two or three years. Serve at 10 to 12°C with grilled fish, roast chicken or charcuterie.
