Description
Château du Cèdre Cahors GC is a pure Malbec drawn from the oldest vines of one of the reference estates of the appellation.
Cahors lies inland from Bordeaux on the river Lot and is the historic home of Malbec, known locally as Côt or Auxerrois, a grape that gives a darker, firmer and more tannic wine here than it does in Argentina. Château du Cèdre sits at Vire-sur-Lot, where gravel and clay lie over a limestone base, and the Verhaeghe brothers farm the property organically, working parcel by parcel with ambient yeast and a light hand with sulphur. GC is a selection from the estate's oldest parcels, fully destemmed, fermented with an extended maceration and matured in oak barrel, then held in bottle before release so that it reaches the table with some of its tannin already resolved.
Dense and firmly structured, it is built for slow-cooked lamb, duck confit and cassoulet, and it repays decanting; serve at around 17 degrees.
