Description
Château du Cèdre Cahors Héritage is the estate's straightforward appellation Malbec, bottled under screwcap.
Cahors lies on the river Lot upstream of Bordeaux and is the historic home of Malbec, known locally as Côt or Auxerrois. Château du Cèdre is at Vire-sur-Lot at the warm western end of the valley, where the Verhaeghe family farm around thirty certified organic hectares split between the gravel terraces above the river and the limestone causse of the plateau above. Work there is parcel by parcel, with ambient yeast, long macerations and a light hand with sulphur. Héritage is the first of the Cahors bottlings, pure Malbec drawn from across the estate's terrace and causse parcels, fermented in tank and given little or no new oak so that the variety's dark fruit and firm tannin come through directly. The screwcap closure suits a wine made to be drunk young.
Structured but approachable, it suits cassoulet, duck, lamb and grilled red meat; serve at 16 to 17 degrees.
