Château du Cèdre Cahors Le Cèdre 2020

Château du Cèdre Cahors Le Cèdre is the estate's flagship, pure Malbec from its oldest vines and its longest barrel ageing.

Cahors lies on the river Lot upstream of Bordeaux and is the historic home of Malbec, known locally as Côt or Auxerrois. Château du Cèdre is at Vire-sur-Lot at the warm western end of the valley, where the Verhaeghe family farm around thirty certified organic hectares split between the gravel terraces above the river and the limestone causse of the plateau above. Work there is parcel by parcel, with ambient yeast, long macerations and a light hand with sulphur. Le Cèdre is the top of that range, taken from the oldest Malbec on the gravel terraces, fermented parcel by parcel with a long maceration and raised for well over a year in French oak with a high proportion of new wood. It is the bottling that made the estate's reputation, and it ages for a decade or more.

Deep, tannic and oak-framed, it calls for slow-roasted lamb, beef and truffled dishes and needs a long decant; serve at around 17 degrees.
