Description
Château Dufort-Vivens is a Margaux second growth, and one of the very few classified Médoc estates farmed biodynamically.
The property, whose name is properly spelled Durfort-Vivens, recalls the Durfort de Duras family, landholders here from the fourteenth century, and Vivens, a later owner. It was ranked a Deuxième Cru Classé in 1855. The vineyards lie on gravel in the commune of Margaux and are planted overwhelmingly to Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot alongside, a higher proportion of Cabernet than most of the neighbours carry. Gonzague Lurton has directed the estate for decades and took it through organic and then biodynamic conversion to certification, and part of the production is now raised in amphorae rather than oak barrels, a rare sight among the classified growths of the Médoc.
It suits lamb, beef and hard cheese, and usually benefits from a decade in the cellar; serve at around 17 degrees.
