Description
Château d’Yquem 1er Grand Cru Classé Supérieur en 1855 is the benchmark Sauternes, a richly sweet white from the only estate ranked Premier Cru Supérieur in 1855.
Vines have been grown on this hilltop for more than four centuries, and today the estate is run by Pierre Lurton for the LVMH group. Its soils are a patchwork of gravel, sand and clay, drained by a long network of underground pipes, which helps Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc ripen fully before botrytis sets in. Each plot is picked in several passes so that only shrivelled, noble-rotted grapes reach the press, and the juice ferments in new French oak barrels where the wine then matures. The château describes 2023 as a dream vintage, perfectly balanced, and a fitting reward for the work of its vineyard and cellar teams.
Serve at around 9 to 11 degrees in a medium-sized white wine glass. It is superb with Roquefort, foie gras, roast chicken with a little cream, or spiced Asian dishes, and equally good on its own in place of dessert. Sealed under cork, it has the structure to age for fifty years or more.
