Description
Château-Figeac 1er Grand Cru Classé is a Saint-Émilion grown on gravel in the west of the appellation, on the boundary with Pomerol.
Figeac is one of the largest estates in Saint-Émilion and takes its name from a Roman villa that once stood on the site. Its distinction is geological: three rises of gravel, left by ancient river flows, of a kind far more common in the Médoc than on the right bank. That soil supports a blend unlike its neighbours, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc each planted in roughly equal measure to Merlot. The Manoncourt family has held the property since the nineteenth century, and Figeac was promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé A in the 2022 revision of the Saint-Émilion classification.
Decant well ahead and serve at around 17 degrees with roast lamb, beef or game; it typically asks for a decade and will hold for many more.
