Description
Château Filhot is a classified Sauternes estate on the southern edge of the appellation, with one of the grandest houses in the region.
Filhot was ranked a Deuxième Cru Classé in 1855 and has stayed in the hands of a family connected by marriage to the Lur Saluces, the line long associated with Yquem. Its château, rebuilt in a severe neoclassical style in the early nineteenth century, stands in parkland in the commune of Sauternes itself. The vineyard is among the largest in the appellation, planted on sandy gravel over clay to Sémillon with Sauvignon Blanc and a little Muscadelle. The fruit is picked in successive passes as botrytis cinerea concentrates the berries, and the house has traditionally aimed at a lighter reading of Sauternes, with restrained use of new oak.
Serve it well chilled, with foie gras, blue cheese or fruit desserts, and give it time in the cellar if a richer character is wanted.
