Description
Château Filhot, 2ème G.C.C, 1855 is a second growth of Sauternes, set in parkland at the southern end of the appellation.
The estate holds one of the largest vineyards in Sauternes, on sandy gravel over clay in the commune that gives the appellation its name, and it has remained with a family linked by marriage to the Lur Saluces of Yquem. The imposing neoclassical château dates from the early nineteenth century. Sémillon dominates the plantings, with Sauvignon Blanc and a small share of Muscadelle, and the harvest is carried out in a series of passes through the rows as botrytis cinerea shrivels the grapes and concentrates them. Filhot has long been known for a lighter reading of the style, with new oak used sparingly, which sets it apart from the richer houses of the appellation.
It suits foie gras, blue cheese and fruit desserts, and should be served well chilled.
