Description
Château Gazin is a Merlot-based Pomerol from one of the largest estates on the plateau, sharing a boundary with Pétrus.
Pomerol is an appellation of very small holdings, most counted in a handful of hectares, which makes Gazin unusual for its size; it sits on the clay and gravel plateau at the eastern end of the commune. The de Bailliencourt family have owned it since 1917. In 1969 they sold a parcel of their best land to the neighbouring Pétrus, a decision that has been talked about in Bordeaux ever since. Pomerol was never classified, so its wines are judged on record alone rather than on rank. Merlot dominates the plantings, with Cabernet Franc alongside, and the wine is fermented and aged in French oak barrels.
It suits duck, beef and mushroom dishes, and generally comes into its own from about eight years on. Serve at around 17 degrees, decanting an hour ahead if the bottle is young.
