Description
Château Gazin L'Hospitalet de Gazin is the second wine of one of the largest estates in Pomerol, a property whose neighbours on the plateau include Pétrus and L'Évangile.
Gazin sits on the eastern side of the Pomerol plateau, where gravel and clay lie over the iron-rich subsoil that growers here call crasse de fer. The estate covers a substantial single block, which is a rarity in an appellation made up of very small holdings, and it has been in the hands of the de Bailliencourt family for generations. Merlot dominates the planting, with Cabernet Franc and a little Cabernet Sauvignon in support. The name recalls the Knights Hospitaller, who held land in this part of Libourne in the Middle Ages. This label is drawn from the lots not selected for the grand vin, made in the same cellar and raised in French oak.
Serve at 16 to 18 degrees with roast duck, beef or mushroom dishes, decanting younger bottles an hour ahead.
