Description
Château Gruaud-Larose, 2ème G.C.C, 1855 is a Second Growth of Saint-Julien and one of the largest single vineyard holdings in the Médoc.
The property traces to the eighteenth century, when the Abbé Gruaud drew the vineyard together; his successor, the lawyer Joseph-Sébastien Larose, added the second half of the name. Its old motto, 'le roi des vins, le vin des rois', still appears on the label. The vines form one continuous block of deep gravel on a rise set back from the Gironde, classified Second Growth in 1855, and the estate has been held since the late 1990s by the Merlaut family. Cabernet Sauvignon leads a traditional Médoc blend completed by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, and the wine has a long record of rewarding patient cellaring.
Serve at 16 to 18 degrees with slow-cooked lamb, beef or game, decanting well ahead; bottles of this rank reward a decade or more in the cellar.
