Description
Château Haut-Batailley, 5ème Cru is a Fifth Growth of Pauillac and the smaller half of an estate that was divided within living memory.
Batailley was split in the 1940s, the portion that became Haut-Batailley taking vineyards on gravel rises towards the Saint-Julien boundary. It was run for decades by the Borie family, owners of Ducru-Beaucaillou, and was bought in 2017 by the Cazes family of Lynch-Bages, who have since rebuilt the cellars and replanted parts of the vineyard. Cabernet Sauvignon dominates, as it does throughout Pauillac, with Merlot in support on the sections of heavier soil. The commune's name is thought to recall a battle fought at the close of the Hundred Years War, and Batailley and Haut-Batailley remain among its more approachable classified growths.
Serve at 16 to 18 degrees with lamb, beef or duck; which makes it a good way to try the wine early.
