Description

Château Haut-Brion, 1ème G.C.C, 1855 is a First Growth and the only estate outside the Médoc included in the 1855 classification of red Bordeaux.

The property lies at Pessac, now enclosed by the suburbs of Bordeaux, on a deep mound of the gravel that gives the Graves its name. It has the longest documented reputation of any Bordeaux estate: Samuel Pepys drank 'Ho Bryan' in a London tavern in 1663, and Thomas Jefferson visited in 1787. Since 1935 it has belonged to the Dillon family, whose Domaine Clarence Dillon also owns La Mission Haut-Brion across the road. Unusually for a First Growth, the blend is often led by Merlot with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc alongside, a reflection of a warm, early-ripening site. A small quantity of white wine is made as well.

A wine for roast lamb, beef and game, served at 16 to 18 degrees and decanted well ahead; it will cellar for two decades or more.
