Description
Château L'Évangile is a Pomerol estate on the plateau between Pétrus and the Saint-Émilion boundary, with Cheval Blanc as a near neighbour.
The vineyard was in place by the middle of the eighteenth century under the name Fazilleau and took its present name shortly afterwards. It passed to the Ducasse family and then, in 1990, to Domaines Barons de Rothschild, owners of Château Lafite, who have since reworked the vineyard and built a new cellar. Its soils are gravel over clay in the north, closer to Cheval Blanc, and heavier clay towards Pétrus, which accounts for the high proportion of Merlot with Cabernet Franc alongside it. Pomerol has never been classified, but L'Évangile has long been counted among the appellation's leading properties on the strength of its site alone.
Serve at 16 to 18 degrees with beef, duck or truffle dishes, decanting while young; it rewards fifteen years or more in the cellar.
