Description
Description
Château La Conseillante is a Pomerol estate on the plateau where the appellation runs up against Saint-Émilion, with Cheval Blanc and L'Évangile as neighbours.
The property is named after Catherine Conseillan, a Libourne metal merchant who owned it in the eighteenth century, and it has been held by the Nicolas family since 1871, an unusually long run of single ownership in Bordeaux. The vineyard is a single block divided between gravel and clay soils, planted to Merlot with Cabernet Franc, and it is worked with a level of parcel-by-parcel detail that has made it a reference for the appellation. Pomerol has never been classified, so estates such as this one are judged on soil and consistency alone; La Conseillante's violet livery, taken from the family colours, is among the most recognisable on the right bank.
Serve at 16 to 18 degrees with duck, beef or mushroom dishes, decanting while young; it will cellar for a decade or more.
