Description
Château la Grolet Origines is a biodynamic Côtes de Bourg red cropped at 25 hectolitres per hectare from vines approaching fifty years old.
The Côtes de Bourg lies on the right bank of the Gironde, a landscape of rolling hills sometimes called the little Switzerland of the estuary, and its gravel-rich soils give a firmer, more structured red than the neighbouring Blaye. The Hubert family own two estates here: Peybonhomme-les-Tours in the Côtes de Blaye and Château La Grolet to the south, both farmed biodynamically. The blend for Origines is seventy per cent Merlot with fifteen per cent Cabernet Sauvignon, ten per cent Cabernet Franc and five per cent Malbec, picked at yields far below the appellation norm. Fermentation ran without added yeasts in a mixture of concrete and wooden vessels, the latter accounting for about a fifth. The wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered with only a small sulphur addition.
Good drinking now and capable of five to ten years in bottle. Serve at 16-18°C with steak frites, roast lamb or a slow-cooked beef daube.
