Château la Grolet Côtes de Bourg Origines 2021

Château la Grolet Côtes de Bourg Origines is a biodynamic right-bank red cropped at yields more usually associated with Bordeaux's small-production cult wines.

Côtes de Bourg lies on the right bank of the Gironde, and Château La Grolet is the sister property to Château Peybonhomme-Les-Tours in Blaye, a short distance to the north. The cooler, gravel-rich terroir here gives a darker and more firmly structured red than the Blaye wines, without giving up any of the class or the value. The blend is seventy per cent Merlot, fifteen per cent Cabernet Sauvignon, ten per cent Cabernet Franc and five per cent Malbec, from vines approaching fifty years of age cropped at 25 hectolitres per hectare. Farming is biodynamic. Fermentation runs on indigenous yeasts in concrete vessels, and the wine is bottled without fining or filtration and with only a small addition of sulphur; nothing else goes in. It is Bordeaux in the country idiom, savoury rather than polished.

Very good drinking now and unlikely to tire for five to ten years. Serve at 16-18°C with steak frites, roast lamb or a beef and mushroom pie.
