Château la Grolet Côtes de Bourg Tête de Cuvée 2018

Tête de Cuvée is Château la Grolet's annual selection of the twenty finest barrels in the cellar, from biodynamically farmed old vines in the Côtes de Bourg.

The Côtes de Bourg sits on the right bank of the Gironde, north of Bordeaux city and across the water from the Médoc, on clay and limestone slopes that suit Merlot. Château la Grolet is run by Guillaume Hubert, whose family have farmed the property organically and then biodynamically for decades — an early and still unusual commitment in Bordeaux. The blend for this selection changes with the season; this release is 90 per cent Merlot with 10 per cent Malbec, drawn predominantly from the estate's oldest vines, between sixty and seventy years of age. The barrels are chosen by tasting rather than by parcel. The style is deliberately low-intervention: a core of dark, concentrated, supple plummy fruit carried on focused acidity, with fine-grained tannin and a little cedar and fruitcake spice from the wood.

Drinking well now with a decant and worth eight to ten years in the cellar. Serve at 16 to 18°C with roast beef, duck or a mature cheddar.
