Description
Château La Mission Haut-Brion is a classed growth of Graves whose vineyard sits on the gravel rise directly across the road from Château Haut-Brion itself.
The property lies in Talence, on the urban fringe of Bordeaux, in the stretch of Graves where the region's reputation was made long before the marshes of the Médoc were drained. Its name comes from the Lazarist mission that tended the vines from the seventeenth century, and the small chapel still stands among them. Deep beds of gravel over clay and sand give warmth and drainage, and the blend leans more heavily on Merlot and Cabernet Franc than most Left Bank classed growths. Since 1983 the estate has belonged to Domaine Clarence Dillon, owner of Haut-Brion, and the two are farmed and made to the same standard.
Decant well ahead and serve at 17 to 18 degrees with roast lamb, beef or game. This is a wine built for the long haul and repays a decade or more in the cellar.
