Description
Château La Mission Haut-Brion is a classed growth of Pessac-Léognan made on gravel croupes in Bordeaux's inner suburbs, directly across the old road from Château Haut-Brion.
Pessac-Léognan is the northern, finest part of the Graves, and La Mission sits at its urban heart in Talence, where deep beds of gunzian gravel over clay and sand store heat and drain hard. The property takes its name from the Lazarist priests who farmed it from the seventeenth century, and it belongs to Domaine Clarence Dillon, owner of Haut-Brion on the opposite side of the road to Arcachon; the two are made by the same team but kept entirely separate from vineyard to bottle. Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon share most of the blend with Cabernet Franc in support, and after fermentation in stainless steel the wine spends around twenty months in oak barrel, most of it new.
Dense and smoky in the way of the Graves, it suits roast game, beef and mature cheeses and needs time in bottle; decant and serve at around 17 degrees.
