Château La Mondotte 2022

Château La Mondotte is a Saint-Émilion made from a single small vineyard on the limestone plateau above Saint-Laurent-des-Combes.

The plot is tiny by Bordeaux standards and for most of its history its fruit was blended away into other wines. That changed in the mid 1990s, when Comte Stephan von Neipperg, whose family also holds Château Canon-la-Gaffelière nearby, began bottling it separately with very low yields, fermentation in small wooden vats and ageing in a high proportion of new oak. The site is clay over limestone at the plateau edge, planted largely to Merlot with Cabernet Franc. The wine's reputation grew quickly, and in the 2012 revision of the Saint-Émilion classification it was raised to Premier Grand Cru Classé B.

A wine for slow roasted beef, duck or veal, served at 16 to 18 degrees. Production is small and bottles reward patience, so give younger ones several years and a long decant.
