Description

Château Laballe Bas Armagnac in this large-format vintage release is 100% Baco, from a year the estate rates highly for terroir expression.

Château Laballe is at Parleboscq in the Bas Armagnac, the western and most prized of the three Armagnac zones, where sandy boulbènes soils sit between the Landes forest and the Gers river. The domaine was bought by Jean-Dominique Laudet in 1820 and is now in its eighth generation with Cyril and Julie Laudet, who have set about raising the profile of a spirit that has spent centuries in the shadow of Cognac. Baco, bred locally in the late nineteenth century and permitted nowhere else in French appellation spirits, gives a broader, rounder distillate than Ugni Blanc and holds up to decades in wood. Maturation is in Landes oak casks, and bottling is done without added colour, without filtration and at the natural strength of the barrel.

Serve at room temperature in a tulip glass after dinner, with dark chocolate, roasted nuts or a mature cheese; the 2.5-litre bottle suits a crowd.
