Description

Château Laballe Bas Armagnac in this large-format release is made entirely from Baco and bottled at natural cask strength.

Baco is Armagnac's own variety, a hybrid bred in the Landes at the end of the nineteenth century and the only one of its kind allowed in a French appellation spirit. On the sandy soils of Bas Armagnac it gives a distillate with more body than Ugni Blanc and one that takes long cask ageing particularly well. Château Laballe, at Parleboscq on the edge of the Landes forest in Gascony, has been in the Laudet family since 1820. Distillation is in the estate's wood-fired copper still, in service since 1923, and maturation takes place in Chêne Noir Gascon: 410-litre barrels made from oak cut in the forest nearby, whose thick grain releases tannin and spice slowly across the decades. Nothing is added for colour, and the Armagnac is bottled unfiltered, brut de fût, generally from a single barrel.

Presented in a 2.5-litre bottle for a table of guests; serve at room temperature in a tulip glass with dark chocolate, dried fruit or aged cheese.
