Bas Armagnac is the westernmost and most highly regarded of the three Armagnac zones, a landscape of sandy boulbènes soils at the edge of the Landes forest in Gascony. Château Laballe lies at Parleboscq, and the Laudet family has been there since 1820. Aged Armagnac of this kind conveys a sense of place that is rare among spirits, and Laballe's vintage releases are notable for their texture and persistence. The wine is distilled in the domaine's wood-fired copper still, which dates from 1923, and the spirit then matures in Chêne Noir Gascon — 410-litre barrels coopered from oak cut in the nearby Landes forest. That thick-grained wood gives plenty of tannin and spice, and is a large part of the house style. No colour is added, and the spirits are bottled brut de fût: unfiltered, at their natural strength, and often from a single barrel.

The large format suits a long dinner or a gift; serve at room temperature in a tulip glass with dark chocolate, walnuts or a hard aged cheese.
