Description
Château Laballe Bas Armagnac is a vintage brandy from the Landes edge of Gascony, bottled unfiltered at its natural strength.
Bas Armagnac is the westernmost and most highly regarded of the three Armagnac zones, and Château Laballe sits at Parleboscq on the edge of the great Landes forest. The Laudet family bought the estate in 1820 and is now in its eighth generation. Distillation takes place in the domaine's own wood-fired copper still, in use since 1923, after which the spirit goes into Chêne Noir Gascon — 410-litre casks coopered from oak cut in the nearby Landes. That thick-grained wood gives more tannin and spice than most brandy casks and accounts for much of the estate's style. Nothing is added for colour, and the spirit is bottled brut de fût: unfiltered, at its natural alcohol level and often from a single barrel. This release is made entirely from Ugni Blanc.
Best served at room temperature in a tulip glass, or over a single large piece of ice in warm weather. It suits the end of a meal with dark chocolate, walnuts or a mature hard cheese.
