Description
Château Laballe Bas Armagnac Ice is the youngest release in the estate's 3-12-21 range, made for pouring over ice and into cocktails.
Armagnac is France's oldest brandy, distilled in Gascony for at least seven centuries and predating Cognac by roughly a century and a half. Bas Armagnac, the westernmost of the three sub-regions, sits on sandy fawn soils that are held to give the most perfumed and finely textured spirit of the appellation. Château Laballe lies in the village of Parleboscq, between the Gers river and the edge of the Landes forest, and was bought by Jean-Dominique Laudet in 1820 after a career in the spice trade; Cyril and Julie Laudet are the eighth generation to run it. Ice is distilled from Ugni Blanc, the workhorse white variety of French brandy, and aged for a minimum of three years in barrels from the Landes forest, a quarter of them new. The short élevage keeps the spirit fine-boned and fresh while the new wood lends enough body and texture to stand up to dilution. It comes in a 500ml bottle with a retail dust bag.
Drink young, as intended. Serve chilled or over a large cube as an aperitif, with olives, jamón or salted almonds, and treat it as a base for a highball or a citrus-driven cocktail.
