Château Laballe Bas Armagnac Rich 12 years 500ml

Château Laballe Bas Armagnac Rich 12 years is the middle bottling of the domaine's 3-12-21 range, aged for a minimum of twelve years.

Château Laballe farms in the sandy Bas Armagnac country of the Landes, the western and most highly regarded of the three armagnac zones. Rich is made from 80 per cent Ugni Blanc and 20 per cent Baco, the latter a hybrid now unique to the region, and is distilled in the estate's wood-fired copper pot before spending at least twelve years in oak barrels from the neighbouring Landes forest. That wood is thick grained and slow to give, so the ageing builds structure and spice gradually rather than laying on obvious oak. The result is layered and generous, with earthy depth on one side and a fresher, zesty citrus edge on the other, and it carries the extra texture that the middle of the range is meant to deliver.

Good after dinner, served neat at room temperature, and robust enough to add spicy depth to a Sazerac; it also suits dark chocolate and dried fruit.
