Description
Château Laballe Bas Armagnac Rich is the twelve-year-old release in the estate's 3-12-21 range, built on Ugni Blanc with a fifth of Baco.
Armagnac is France's oldest brandy, distilled in Gascony for at least seven centuries and predating Cognac by roughly a century and a half. Bas Armagnac, the westernmost of the three sub-regions, sits on sandy fawn soils that are held to give the most perfumed and finely textured spirit of the appellation. Château Laballe lies in the village of Parleboscq, between the Gers river and the edge of the Landes forest, and was bought by Jean-Dominique Laudet in 1820 after a career in the spice trade; Cyril and Julie Laudet are the eighth generation to run it. The Rich is crafted from 80% Ugni Blanc and 20% Baco, distilled in Laballe's wood-fired copper pot still and then aged for a minimum of twelve years in oak barrels cut from the nearby Landes forest. That combination gives a generous, layered Armagnac with earthy depth balanced by citrus lift, and the extra years in wood add texture without heaviness. It is presented in a 500ml bottle with a retail dust bag.
Ready to drink now. Serve at room temperature, around 18°C, in a tulip glass after dinner with dark chocolate or salted caramel, or use it in place of rye in a Sazerac.
