Description
Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey, 1er G.C.C, 1855 is a first growth Sauternes from Bommes, made only in the years when noble rot arrives properly.
The 1855 classification ranked the sweet wines of Sauternes and Barsac as well as the reds of the Médoc, and Lafaurie-Peyraguey was placed among the premiers crus. Its vineyard lies on gravel over clay near the Ciron, whose cool waters generate the autumn mists that allow Botrytis cinerea to take hold. Bommes, with Sauternes, Barsac, Preignac and Fargues, makes up the small group of communes entitled to the appellation. Grapes are picked by hand in repeated passes, taking only shrivelled berries, which is slow, costly and entirely dependent on the weather. Sémillon provides the bulk of the blend, with Sauvignon Blanc, and the wine is fermented and matured in oak barrels before bottling.
Serve well chilled at about 8 degrees with foie gras, Roquefort, or simply on its own after dinner. Opened bottles keep well in the fridge for several days.
