Description
Château Lafite Rothschild 1er G.C.C, 1855 is the Pauillac first growth that lies at the northern edge of the commune, on the boundary with Saint-Estèphe.
Lafite was listed first among the first growths in 1855 and has belonged to the Rothschild family since Baron James de Rothschild bought it at auction in 1868. The vineyard runs over deep gravel croupes around the château and across the neighbouring plateau of Carruades, with a small holding lying over the commune line in Saint-Estèphe that is nonetheless entitled to the Pauillac name. Cabernet Sauvignon dominates, with Merlot and small amounts of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, and the wine is raised in new oak for around twenty months. The circular first year cellar, completed in the late 1980s to a design by Ricardo Bofill, is among the most photographed rooms in Bordeaux.
Serve at 17 to 18 degrees with roast lamb, beef or game, decanted a good two hours ahead. It is a wine made for long cellaring and is rarely at its best young.
