Description
Chateau Lafleur is a Pomerol of legendary scarcity, made from a handful of hectares on the plateau a short walk from Petrus.
Pomerol has no classification and no grand architecture; its hierarchy was built entirely on the reputation of individual plots, and Lafleur sits on the best of them, where gravel and sand give way to iron-rich clay. The vineyard is tiny, the vines are old, and the blend is unusual for the appellation in giving Cabernet Franc, known locally as Bouchet, close to equal billing with Merlot. The property passed from the Robin sisters to their relatives the Guinaudeau family, who farm it with a deliberately unhurried hand, picking plot by plot and ageing in barrel without heavy new oak. Production is measured in a few hundred cases.
This is a wine built for the cellar, and it repays a decade or more; decant well ahead and serve at around 17 degrees with roast beef, venison or aged hard cheese.
