Château Lafon-Rochet 4ème Grand Cru Classé en 1855 2020

Château Lafon-Rochet is a Fourth Growth red from Saint-Estèphe, built on Cabernet Sauvignon and classic Médoc gravel.

The estate occupies a knoll at the southern edge of the appellation, a stone's throw from the Pauillac border, and shares its neighbourhood with Cos d'Estournel and Lafite Rothschild. After buying the property in 1960, the Tesseron family modernised the vineyard and cellar and turned it into one of the more reliable classified growths in the commune. The blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot spends time in French oak. The 2020 was slightly closed in its youth but opens to fine, elegant red berry fruit, with a smooth, fruity attack and supple tannins, and it will gain complexity with a few more years in bottle.

Give it time: this is best cellared for a few years, then decanted and served at 17 to 18 degrees with roast lamb, beef or hard cheese.
