Château Lafon-Rochet Les Pèlerins 2020

Château Lafon-Rochet Les Pèlerins is the second wine of the Saint-Estèphe Fourth Growth, made to be enjoyed younger than the grand vin.

The parent estate sits on a gravel rise in the south of Saint-Estèphe, bordering Château Cos d'Estournel and not far from Lafite Rothschild. The Tesseron family, also long-time owners of Pontet-Canet, bought the estate in 1960 and rebuilt the château and vineyard over the following decades, and the building's distinctive yellow walls are now a local landmark. Les Pèlerins draws on younger vines and parcels that suit an earlier-drinking style, blended from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and a little Petit Verdot. The 2020 is medium-bodied, with blackcurrant, plum and liquorice, a savoury graphite edge and fine-grained tannins.

Serve at 16 to 18 degrees without much fuss. It's a great match for a mid-week steak, lamb burgers or mushroom pasta, and it's approachable now while holding for a few more years.
