Château Lafon-Rochet Les Pèlerins 2022

Château Lafon-Rochet Les Pèlerins is the second label of a classified Saint-Estèphe estate, offering the house style at an earlier-drinking stage.

Pèlerins means pilgrims in French. The wine is made from younger vines and from plots with mostly clay and gravel soils, blended from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Lafon-Rochet itself is a Fourth Growth whose vineyard lies next to Cos d'Estournel at the southern edge of Saint-Estèphe, close to the Pauillac border, and it was largely replanted by the Tesseron family after they bought it in 1960. 2022 was a hot, dry year in Bordeaux that gave ripe, concentrated wines, and this one stays true to its terroir while being accessible in its youth.

Here's an easy-going claret for the table: serve at around 17 degrees with roast chicken, pork belly or a cheese and charcuterie board. Drink over the next five or so years.
