Château Latour, 1er G.C.C, 1855 2010

Château Latour, 1er G.C.C, 1855 is a Pauillac first growth, made from the walled vineyard that looks out over the Gironde estuary.

The heart of the estate is the Enclos, the walled block of vines that runs down to the Gironde on the southern boundary of Pauillac; only fruit from within it goes into the grand vin. Gravel here lies several metres deep over clay. The tower on the label is not the mediaeval fort that gave the property its name but a seventeenth century dovecote built on its site. Cabernet Sauvignon makes up the great bulk of the blend, filled out with Merlot. François Pinault has owned Latour since 1993, the vineyard is farmed organically, and the estate left the en primeur system after 2011, releasing wines only when it judges them ready.

Serve at 17 to 18 degrees with roast beef, lamb or game, decanting two hours ahead. It is among the longest lived wines in Bordeaux and is worth keeping for decades.
