Description
Château Latour-Martillac, Grand Cru Classé de Graves Rouge is a classified red from Martillac, in the Pessac-Léognan appellation on the southern edge of Bordeaux.
Pessac-Léognan was carved out of the northern Graves as its own appellation in 1987, recognising the gravel plateaux closest to Bordeaux where vines have been grown since Roman times. Martillac sits at the southern end of it, and the tower that gives the estate its name is the surviving keep of a mediaeval fort. The soils are deep gravel over limestone and clay, warm and free draining, and Cabernet Sauvignon leads the red blend with Merlot and a little Petit Verdot before ageing in French oak. The Kressmann family, Bordeaux merchants of long standing, have run the property since the early twentieth century, and it is one of the few estates classified for both its red and its white wines.
Serve at 16 to 18 degrees with roast lamb, beef or game birds. It drinks well at five years and will hold comfortably for fifteen.
