Description

Château Leoville Barton, 3ème Grand Cru Classé en 1855 is a Saint-Julien third growth held by the same Anglo-Irish family for close to two centuries.

Hugh Barton, an Irish merchant established in Bordeaux, bought a quarter of the vast Léoville estate in 1826, a few years after acquiring neighbouring Langoa. The two properties have been farmed together ever since, and Léoville Barton remains unusual among classified growths in having no château of its own; the wine is made and matured in the cellars at Langoa Barton. Saint-Julien lies between Pauillac and Margaux on deep gravel banks close to the Gironde, and the commune is often called the most consistent in the Médoc. The blend leans on Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, raised in French oak, in a house style built for the long haul rather than early appeal.

Roast lamb, aged beef and mature hard cheeses suit it well, and bottles reward a decade or more in a cool cellar.
