Château Léoville Las Cases Le Petit Lion de Léoville Saint-Julien 2016

Le Petit Lion de Léoville is the second wine of Château Léoville Las Cases, drawn from younger vines and parcels outside the estate's walled Grand Clos.

Saint-Julien sits on gravel terraces that drain sharply down to the Gironde, midway between Pauillac and Margaux. Le Petit Lion was created to give a home to the fruit that no longer meets the grand vin's selection, chiefly younger plantings and plots beyond the Grand Clos wall, and it is made in the same cellar under the same regime of hand picking, table sorting and parcel-by-parcel vinification. Merlot carries a larger share of the blend than it does in the senior wine, with Cabernet Sauvignon providing the frame and a little Cabernet Franc for lift. Ageing is shorter and in a lower proportion of new oak, so the wine keeps the estate's shape while being scaled for earlier drinking.

Medium-bodied and approachable long before its senior sibling, it suits grilled steak, roast poultry and mushroom dishes; serve at around 17 degrees.
