Description
Château Léoville Las Cases is the largest surviving portion of the old Léoville estate and Saint-Julien's most celebrated second growth, built around the walled Grand Clos on the Pauillac border.
Saint-Julien lies between Pauillac and Margaux and is often called the most consistent commune in the Médoc, combining Pauillac's structure with Margaux's polish. Las Cases takes its identity from the Grand Clos, a walled block of deep gravel that runs down towards the Gironde alongside Château Latour, and the Delon family have directed the property with a famously exacting hand for generations. Selection is severe, with only a portion of each crop admitted to the grand vin and the remainder declassified into other labels. Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the blend, supported by Merlot and a little Cabernet Franc; fermentation takes place in a mix of wooden and stainless vats, followed by around eighteen months in oak barrel with a high proportion of new wood.
Built for the long haul and firm in youth, it wants roast beef, game and mature hard cheese; give it a long decant and serve at around 17 degrees.
