Description
Château Léoville-Poyferré, 2ème G.C.C, 1855 is the third part of the divided Léoville estate in Saint-Julien.
When the great Léoville property was split in the nineteenth century, this portion passed by marriage to the Baron de Poyferré, whose name it still carries. The Cuvelier family, merchants from the north of France, bought it in 1920 and owns it still, and a long programme of replanting and cellar investment through the 1980s and 1990s restored the estate to the front rank. The vines lie on the gravel plateau of Saint-Julien, sharing boundaries with Léoville Barton and Léoville Las Cases. Cabernet Sauvignon leads the blend, with Merlot, Petit Verdot and a little Cabernet Franc, and the élevage takes place in French oak, a good part of it new.
Serve with roast or grilled red meat and game, decant young bottles, and expect the better vintages to improve for fifteen years or more.
