Description
Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion is a Pessac-Léognan estate hidden inside the city of Bordeaux itself, a walled island of vines surrounded by suburbs.
The land was given to the Carmelite friars in 1584 by the family of Jean de Pontac, whose Haut-Brion lies close by, and the estate carried the order's name through the centuries that followed. It is one of the last vineyards still enclosed within greater Bordeaux, watered by the Peugue stream and worked as a walled clos. Since 2010 the property has been substantially expanded and rebuilt, with a striking modern cellar designed by Philippe Starck. The wine is unusual for the Left Bank in leaning heavily on Cabernet Franc alongside Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and whole bunches are used in fermentation, a technique more familiar in Burgundy and the northern Rhône.
It goes well with roast duck, mushroom dishes or a rib of beef, and repays several years in the cellar.
